Goal: pick the notification sound you like instead of one fixed sound, like Discord/Telegram, ideally per kind of notification.

What exists

  • One sound for messages: assets/sound/message.ogg, played by the Linux and Windows notifiers (media_kit player) and set as the Android notification channel sound (RawResourceAndroidNotificationSound('message')). Calls use ringtone_in.ogg.
  • Other bundled sounds: joined_call, left_call, muted, unmuted, ringtone_out.
  • No setting to change or silence any of them except system-level notification settings.

Proposal

  • A small set of bundled sounds (5-8, short, licensed CC0/CC-BY or made for us), plus "None".
  • Settings › Notifications › Sound: pick separately for Messages, Mentions & replies and Direct messages, with a play button to preview and a volume slider for desktop (upstream #599 asks for sound and volume settings).
  • Custom sound (desktop): choose your own .ogg/.wav/.mp3 file.
  • Per room (later): override the sound for a specific room, like Telegram.
  • Calls: separate choice for the ringtone; keep join/leave/mute sounds with an on/off toggle.

Android catch

On Android 8+, a notification's sound belongs to its notification channel and can't be changed by the app after the channel exists. So: one channel per sound choice (e.g. messages_<sound>), switching which channel new notifications use, or pointing users to the system channel settings. Decide during implementation. The system's own per-channel setting still works on top.

Upstream #599 (granular desktop notification settings incl. sounds and volume, open). Upstream PR #848 "Add notification sound and more settings" was closed: read it before starting, it may have useful parts or explain why it stalled.

Goal: pick the notification sound you like instead of one fixed sound, like Discord/Telegram, ideally per kind of notification. ## What exists - One sound for messages: `assets/sound/message.ogg`, played by the Linux and Windows notifiers (`media_kit` player) and set as the Android notification channel sound (`RawResourceAndroidNotificationSound('message')`). Calls use `ringtone_in.ogg`. - Other bundled sounds: `joined_call`, `left_call`, `muted`, `unmuted`, `ringtone_out`. - No setting to change or silence any of them except system-level notification settings. ## Proposal - **A small set of bundled sounds** (5-8, short, licensed CC0/CC-BY or made for us), plus "None". - **Settings › Notifications › Sound:** pick separately for *Messages*, *Mentions & replies* and *Direct messages*, with a play button to preview and a volume slider for desktop (upstream #599 asks for sound and volume settings). - **Custom sound (desktop):** choose your own .ogg/.wav/.mp3 file. - **Per room (later):** override the sound for a specific room, like Telegram. - Calls: separate choice for the ringtone; keep join/leave/mute sounds with an on/off toggle. ## Android catch On Android 8+, a notification's sound belongs to its **notification channel** and can't be changed by the app after the channel exists. So: one channel per sound choice (e.g. `messages_<sound>`), switching which channel new notifications use, or pointing users to the system channel settings. Decide during implementation. The system's own per-channel setting still works on top. ## Related Upstream #599 (granular desktop notification settings incl. sounds and volume, open).
